Scent, Strategy & the Tip Debate
Sofia asked about my fragrance. I said Tuxedo by YSL. She wrote something down and refused to elaborate. Also: I pay the bill. She handles the tip. Civilization remains intact.
INT. MATCHMAKING OFFICE – DAY
Soft daylight. Controlled elegance. The GOLDEN FLAMINGO now wears a tiny silk bow tie. No one acknowledges the escalation.
SOFIA C. sits poised with a leather notebook.
I sit across from her, composed. Subtly well-dressed.
SOFIA C.
You smell different today.
ME
Different good or different concerning?
SOFIA C.
Intentional.
ME
Tuxedo. Yves Saint Laurent.
Sofia calmly writes something down in her notebook.
ME
Why are you writing that down?
SOFIA C.
No reason.
ME
That’s never true.
SOFIA C.
Scent communicates before you do.
ME
And what does mine say?
She closes the notebook instead of answering.
SOFIA C.
We’re not discussing that yet.
The GOLDEN FLAMINGO adjusts its bow tie.
SOFIA C.
How did the date go?
ME
Ice cream. Walk. Conversation flowed. No workshops were suggested.
SOFIA C.
Progress.
ME
When the bill came, I paid.
SOFIA C.
Without hesitation?
ME
Of course. I’m a gentleman.
ME
She insisted on covering the tip.
SOFIA C.
Interesting.
ME
I pay the bill. She handles the tip. I look composed. She looks generous. Society wins.
SOFIA C.
And if the tip is… insufficient?
ME
Then we have data.
The GOLDEN FLAMINGO slowly slides a small tip jar across the floor.
SOFIA C.
What else happened?
ME
She talked about changing careers.
SOFIA C.
And you?
ME
I didn’t advise. I asked questions. Let her think out loud. She figured out half the answer herself.
SOFIA C.
You didn’t try to impress her with solutions?
ME
No. I listened.
A subtle pause. Sofia studies him.
SOFIA C.
That’s attractive.
ME
The fragrance or the listening?
SOFIA C.
Both.
ME
So the system works. I smell intentional. I pay the bill. I listen. I do not panic.
SOFIA C.
Careful.
ME
About what?
SOFIA C.
Confidence becomes arrogance when you narrate it too much.
The GOLDEN FLAMINGO’s bow tie is suddenly perfectly straight.
SOFIA C.
